Chicago to Detroit — East on I-94, Around the Bottom of the Lake
Detroit is 283 miles east of Chicago on I-94, roughly four and a half hours of driving as the route swings around the bottom of Lake Michigan, across northern Indiana, and through Michigan into the city. It’s a longer day than our same-day corridors, but it’s still one truck, our own crew, and one price from your Chicago door to your Detroit door.
Out of Chicago first
The day starts at your curb, and that’s where most of the planning goes. Wicker Park and Bucktown three-flats mean a stairwell crew and a residential parking permit so the truck holds the block legally. A Loop or Streeterville high-rise means a reserved freight elevator and a COI on file with building management before we show up. We handle the permit and the paperwork ahead of move day so the load starts on time and we’re onto the Skyway and I-94 without losing the morning.
The drive and the regulation
I-94 carries us east past Gary, around the lake, and into Michigan. Two state lines — Indiana, then Michigan — put the haul squarely under federal oversight; we operate it on our own US DOT and MC numbers, with $1M in cargo protection riding with your belongings. The Chicago Skyway is the one tolled span at the front of the trip, and it’s already inside your quote, never line-itemed at the door.

Into Detroit, and the season to plan for
Midtown lofts and the downtown towers generally want a reserved loading dock or freight elevator and a certificate of insurance, both of which we set up ahead so the crew isn’t cleared in at the curb. The longer drive still lands same-day on most homes; larger houses are typically next-morning. The seasonal variable is lake-effect snow on the I-94 stretch around the bottom of the lake in deep winter, where we leave a buffer in the window.
